Dr. Sam-Emehelu champions confidence, leadership at Lagos girls’ empowerment event
At the “Confident Girls, Healthy Choices” event held on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, in Alausa, Ikeja, Dr. Toyin Sam-Emehelu delivered a powerful message on self-esteem and leadership, urging young girls to embrace their inner strength and step boldly into their future.
Dr. Sam-Emehelu, a seasoned leadership coach, anchored a transformative session that focused on practical strategies for building confidence and leading with purpose. Her session stood out as one of the most impactful moments of the day, as students from across Lagos Education District VI absorbed tools to cultivate resilience and positive self-image.
“You are leaders in the making,” she told the captivated audience of over 200 girls. “Confidence is not something you wait for—it’s something you build. Leadership starts with knowing your worth and standing firm in who you are.”
The event, convened by Fulbright Fellow and educator Mrs. Adeola Akinsulure of Omole Senior Grammar School, was themed “Building confident leaders through self-worth, hygiene, and etiquette.” The initiative aimed to provide adolescent girls with essential knowledge on menstrual hygiene, personal values, and social graces.
“This is more than an event. It is a movement, a mission, and a message to every girl in Lagos State and across the globe: You are enough. You are worthy. Your voice matters,” Akinsulure said in her opening address.
Other notable speakers included Alero Oluwakanyinsola Ejeye, who addressed menstrual hygiene awareness, and Mrs. Adekoya Biliqees, who provided biological insights into menstruation. U.S.-based nurse Adetokunbo Oduloye offered practical menstrual care tips, while actress Juliana Olayode (Toyo Baby) shared a heartfelt talk on purity and self-worth.
In a special segment, Akinsulure launched her new book Glow Girls, describing it as “a love letter from my soul to every girl—reminding her that even when the world tries to dim her light, she must choose to glow anyway.”
The event also featured etiquette training by Joke Victoria Fekumo, and remarks of commendation from Kabiru Abass, Technical Monitor of Wisdom College of Excellence (WICE), who praised Akinsulure’s impact and dedication.
“I appreciate the efforts of Mrs. Adeola Akinsulure who is a facilitator and mentor at the Initiative for Education and Development (IDEE) Teachers Development Programme (TDP) and IDEETeacherPrize,” Abass stated. “She is a great collaborator and team player.”
The day closed with engaging student presentations, interactive sessions, and a networking lunch. A student representative expressed heartfelt gratitude, thanking the facilitators for their time, guidance, and inspiration.
With the help of leaders like Dr. Sam-Emehelu, the girls left emboldened, inspired, and equipped to shine.
